WHAT IS NRPT?
NRPT is a combination of NR (nicotinamide riboside), a NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) precursor vitamin found in milk, and PT (pterostilbene), a polyphenol found in blueberries.
The study reported below, is a first-in-human clinical trials to show the safety and efficacy of a repeat dose of NRPT.
It was conducted as a randomised, double-blind, and placebo controlled study in a population of 120 healthy adults between the ages of 60 and 80 years old.
The study consisted of three treatment arms: placebo, recommended dose of NRPT (NRPT 1X), and double dose of NRPT (NRPT 2X).
The patients took their blinded supplement every day for 8 weeks. Analyzing NAD+ in the blood demonstrated that NRPT enhanced NAD+ levels significantly in a dose-depended manner.
NAD+ levels increased by approximately 40% in the NRPT 1X group and approximately 90% in the NRPT 2X group after 4 weeks as compared to placebo and baseline.
In addition, no serious adverse events were reported in the study, thus demonstrating its safety.
This led to affirm that a repeat dose of NRPT is safe and effective at increasing NAD+ levels in the body.
WHY INCREASING NAD+ LEVELS IN THE BODY IS IMPORTANT?
NAD+ is important in:
- Fuelling reduction-oxidation reactions i.e. carrying electrons from one reaction to another
- Acting as a co-substrate for enzymes such as sirtuins
- Sirtuins are proteins that regulate healthy cell function
NAD+ has been of recent importance – it has potential for improving metabolism.
There has been a vast amount of emerging research into NAD+ precursor supplementation and its effect on ageing.
